Levels of management:

In line with our 3 principles – participation, quality control and sustainability – we work to develop management processes at three levels: the country level, in the communities where we work, and at home in the U.S..

In Guinea, there are currently four staff who are all Guinean nationals and manage all of STS’ programs in Guinea. We provide staff ongoing training in internationally expected standards of transparency, accountability, and results-based management. Staff receive continuous support from the home office through daily emails, weekly Skype meetings, and regular visits by home office staff and international consultants.

In the communities where we implement programs, we systematically provide training to school principals, parents, PTAs and local education authorities in school development planning, monitoring of progress against goals, and seeking assistance from local education partners to continue to support their work.

These investments in the country and community level are critical to build the capacity of STS partners and have allowed us to develop a locally adapted and sustainable program over time.

In the U.S., we have increased our management capacity in 2010 and 2011 given the expansion of operations from one to twelve countries; this has been achieved through the management of multi-year projects and consulting services. We have two offices in the U.S. in the San Francisco Bay Area and the Washington D.C. Area, and employ five full-time employees as well as consultants who provide technical assistance on various programs.
