Girls' Education in Guinea
In December, STS received a grant from the Foundation for Global Community (FGC) to expand its girls’ education program from 3 schools to 15 – enabling us to reach half our partner schools in Guinea so that girls have a greater chance to complete primary school.
Over the years, FGC has supported organizations working to build peace, raise awareness about nature, develop sustainable farming and build schools. Other FGC funding recipients include Music for the Earth (Paul Winter’s “Flyaway Project,”) and Greg Mortenson (3 Cups of Tea). We are honored to be in such esteemed company!
January 21, 2010 - At the tail end of 2009 we received a grant to expand the girls education project in Guinea as well as two new contracts, one in Senegal and one in Mali.
Education in Senegal
In December, STS signed a 4-year contract with the Academy for Educational Development to provide support for curriculum development, teacher training and student achievement testing in 6 regions of the country.
This work, to be carried out under the Basic Education Support Project, aims to increase the relevance of the curriculum at the middle school level and, as a result, improve the quality of teaching and learning in Senegalese classrooms. We are excited about this opportunity to help build Senegal’s education system over the coming years!
Girls' Education in Mali
In November, STS began working with Miske-Witt and Associates in conjunction with the University of Minnesota and CARE International on the Patsy Collins Trust Fund Initiative (PCTFI), a project that supports projects girls’ education projects in 8 countries around the world.
STS will provide research assistance to strengthen monitoring and evaluation systems of non-formal education and vocational training programs for underserved children, especially girls. This contract will help us learn how others are working to improve girls’ education – lessons we will use to strengthen the equity component of our 8-point model.
